802 og ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1876, 8p Brown Lilac (72; SG 156a). Plate 1, lettered E-D, original gum which the certificate calls "sweated" with which we disagree and believe to be lightly hinged, perfs clear design at top and just touching at left, wonderfully rich color and well-incised impression

VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE UNISSUED 1876 PLATE ONE 8-PENCE BROWN LILAC. ONE OF THE KEY RARITIES OF THE SURFACE PRINTED ISSUES.

The 8-Pence stamp was originally printed in Brown Lilac, but it was never issued to post offices. All but a tiny number were destroyed. Of the surviving copies, all have the perfs cutting the design at top and/or left to varying degrees. The 8-Pence stamp was then printed in Orange instead.

With 1991 B.P.A. certificate. SG £9,750 (Image)
