VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE GROUP OF SMALL DIE PROOFS OF THE 1938 PRESIDENTIAL ISSUE. A DIFFICULT GROUP TO ASSEMBLE.
Each of these small die proofs on wove paper is the only known example in private hands. This part set was assembled by the consignor from individual proofs acquired at different times, including the dollar values from our 2006 Rarities sale (hammer $5,000 for only those three). This offering will bring the buyer to within striking distance of assembling the complete set. (Image)

VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE COMPLETE SET OF SMALL DIE PROOFS OF THE OVERRUN COUNTRIES ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY SET WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. A RARITY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, AND UNLISTED IN SCOTT.
In an article in the United States Specialist (Sep. 1994, pp. 410-417), Ronald A. Burns traces the history of small die proof production from the 1903 Roosevelt Albums through the 1950's. The printings after the 1914-15 Panama-Pacific sets are not well documented. This is the only set we have encountered. We have been informed that the set of Large Die Proofs has been donated to the National Postal Museum.
