VERY FINE. A UNIQUE ESSAY OF THE ONE-CENT BUREAU ISSUE, SHOWING WHAT MAY BE THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT SKETCHING OUT THE CORNER TRIANGLE, THE DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTIC OF THE ISSUE.
We have no way of knowing for sure, but this pencil sketch of a corner triangle, which is 3.5mm high, may be one of the first attempts to add a design element that would distinguish the 1894 Bureau Issue from the earlier 1890 Issue. Other essays show the design in varying sizes in ink, but this is the only one drawn in the less permanent medium of pencil.
