2280 E Image30c Burgoyne, Large Die Essay on India (121-E1a). 14 essays mounted on album pages, all of the Scott-listed colors except Carmine, plus an extra Orange, all but five are fully die sunk, range of sizes from 114 x 76mm to 70 x 47mm plus one smaller, gorgeous colors and impressions

VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE, NEARLY COMPLETE GROUP OF THE 24-CENT BURGOYNE LARGE DIE ESSAYS, WITH THE VAST MAJORITY FULLY DIE SUNK ON CARD. HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE.

Among the most beautiful 1869 Pictorial essays are those depicting the original design of the 30c stamp, the Surrender of Burgoyne painting by John Trumbull. Various explanations have been given for why the design was switched to the Eagle and Flags, including fear of offending British sensibilities, Trumbull overkill (as another of his paintings is depicted on the 24c stamp), and an easier production process. What is certain is that the decision was made late. Of the 95 different collectible 30c essays, only four of them depict the issued eagle and flags design. (Image)

Collection of 17 total, covering the various shades of bond papers plus one apparently on Olive Buff paper, colors are identified on the album pages and are nearly complete plus a couple extras, range of sizes from 49 x 50mm, with most in the 40 x 40mm range, only one close to stamp size, a minor flaw or two may be found but these papers are much less fragile than the India or ivory papers

VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO COLOR COMBINATIONS LISTED OF THIS ESSAY ON VEINED IVORY CARD, AND THIS IS THE FINER OF THE TWO RECORDED IN THESE COLORS -- WITH MUCH MORE PROMINENT VEINING.

The other listed color combination, in Black on Green veined ivory card, was offered in our Finkelburg sale. Our 2008 Rarities sale had one in this color combination but the veining is faint on that example. The Carmine on red violet veined card offered in the following lot is unlisted.
