EXTREMELY FINE. A VERY RARE LARGE-SIZE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE CONTRACT COMPETITION.
Scott lists and prices these as "cut to stamp size." In addition, while the single color essay offered here is priced less than the essays with light overprint this must be rarer as this is the first we have offered since keeping computerized records more than 20 years ago (Image)

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE GEORGE T. JONES ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, DEPICTING ULYSSES S. GRANT.
The George T. Jones essay depicts Ulysses S. Grant, who was a living presidential candidate at the time of the bidding process for the 1869 Issue contract. This color combination is unlisted in Scott (Image)
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE GEORGE T. JONES 2-CENT U.S. TREASURY SEAL ESSAY FOR THE 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE.
Scott lists this essay in two formats -- single color in Carmine or Blue, and three colors, in Black with Red Violet wavy line overprint and Blue-Green lined vignette. This bicolor format is not listed. We have not offered any examples of the 2c George T. Jones essay since our 1999 Finkelburg sale and have never before come across this variety. The Scott Retail value has not changed since before the Finkelburg example realized $3,500 sixteen years ago (Image)
