This cover was carried on the Brem. Sh. Post, which departed Honolulu on February 16, 1857, and arrived at San Francisco on March 11 with two bags of mail. Mail to the East Coast was postmarked at San Francisco on March 20. It was then carried on the PMSS Golden Gate, which departed San Francisco March 20 and struck a rock going out. After returning to Mare Island for repairs, the Golden Gate cleared San Francisco again on March 23 and arrived at Panama on April 4. It was then likely carried on the USMSC Illinois, which departed Aspinwall on April 20 and arrived in New York on April 29.
