Hawaii

1851-52 Missionary Issue (Scott 2-4)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1001   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Crocker Type I -- the lefthand position in the setting of two -- large margins three sides, into outer frameline at right, neat strike of black 7-bar grid cancel leaves design and denomination clearly visible, affixed to small piece of card, a few small internal tears, small margin nick at upper left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND NEATLY CANCELLED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 5-CENT HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY.

Our census of Hawaii No. 2, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI2/HI2.pdf .

1002   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Crocker Type I -- the lefthand position in the setting of two -- ample margins to barely touching, vivid red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Au(g) 1(?)" circular datestamp with "U.S. Pos" showing clearly, boldly struck, two small tears and small repairs

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 1851 5-CENT HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY WITH THE "U.S. POSTAGE PAID" CIRCULAR DATESTAMP OF HONOLULU.

The few 5c Missionaries with the Honolulu datestamp present are, in all but this case, cancelled by the "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands" datestamp, which was used when only the 5c Hawaiian postage was paid and United States postage was collected from the addressee. This example is extraordinary and must have been used in conjunction with other stamps to pay the 2c ship captain's fee and U.S. postage (either 6c or 10c). It is the only 5c, on or off cover, with the Honolulu "U.S. Postage Paid" datestamp used as a cancel. The famous 2c and 5c Missionary cover, last offered in our 2013 sale of the Steven C. Walske collection (Sale 1045, lot 11), also bears this marking.

Our census of Hawaii No. 2, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI2/HI2.pdf .

Siegel Census No. 2-I-CAN-44. Ex Clapp, Admiral Harris and Ishikawa. With 1977 P.F. certificate.

The Scott Catalogue notes that "values are for examples with minor damage that has been skillfully repaired." This stamp does not have any paper or printed design additions, which makes it very nearly "unrepaired." (Image)

1003   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Crocker Type II -- the righthand position in the setting of two with the distinctive small "n" in "Cents" (found only on the 5c Type II) -- mostly full margins to just barely in along frameline at bottom and lower right, bold strike of Crossed Bars cancellation (Type 71 with circle), few wrinkles or creases as usual for Missionary stamps that are not repaired, couple tiny margin tears, hinge-sealed horizontal tear at upper left about halfway across above "Hawaiian" (almost invisible)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 5-CENT HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY WITH THE DISTINCTIVE CROSSED BARS CANCELLATION. AN IMPORTANT RARITY FROM THE ATHERTON COLLECTION.

Our census of Hawaii No. 2, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI2/HI2.pdf .

Siegel Census No. 2-II-CAN-50. Ex Henry J. Crocker and Frank C. Atherton (acquired in 1930).

The Scott Catalogue notes that "values are for examples with minor damage that has been skillfully repaired." This stamp does not have any paper additions or repainting, which puts it into the "unrepaired" category. (Image)

1004   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Crocker Type II -- the righthand position in the setting of two with the distinctive small "n" in "Cents" (found only on the 5c Type II) -- crisp shade, magenta manuscript cancellation (applied before use of handstamped cancels), right margin added and small touch up of frameline at top right corner, vertical crease and few small faults

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A STRIKING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 5-CENT HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY WITH THE EARLY MAGENTA MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION. FROM THE ATHERON COLLECTION.

Our census of Hawaii No. 2, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI2/HI2.pdf . Only five 5c stamps have magenta (or red) manuscript cancellations, which were applied before the use of handstamped cancels.

1006   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 13c Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (3). Crocker Type II -- the righthand position in the setting of two -- margins all around, rich color, faint traces of a manuscript "X" cancellation, which has been skillfully removed, tiny pinhole, a few spots of the design at bottom have been touched up in ink

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE FEW EXAMPLES OF THE 1851 13-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY WITH UNUSED APPEARANCE.

Our census of Hawaii No. 3, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue, is available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI3/HI3.pdf . It contains 51 used 13c "Hawaiian Postage" Missionaries, most of which have been heavily cancelled by grids. Although this stamp has been treated to remove the manuscript cancellation, it is nonetheless one of the most attractive examples of this Missionary extant.

Siegel Census No. 3-II-CAN-91. Ex Potts, Admiral Harris, Ishikawa and Golden (Collector C). With 1994 P.F. certificate.

1007   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 13c Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (3). Crocker Type I -- the lefthand position in the setting of two -- mostly large to huge margins, clear of frameline at right, cancelled by bright red "sugar cane" or "sponge" cancel, relatively minor faults and carefully rebacked with right margin added outside frameline

VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 13-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY. AMONG THE FINEST OF THE TEN AVAILABLE EXAMPLES WITH THE DISTINCTIVE "SUGAR CANE" OR "SPONGE" CANCELLATION.

The "sugar cane" or "sponge" cancellation, struck from the cut-off end of a cane or possibly a piece of sponge, is found almost exclusively on the 13c "Hawaiian Islands" Missionary (one 2c is known on piece with a 13c, see Siegel Sale 974, lot 501).

1008   ImageHAWAII, 1851, 13c Blue, "Hawaiian Postage" (3). Crocker type II -- the righthand stamp in the setting of two -- a significant portion of the stamp was peeled off prior to use, no doubt due to the fragile nature of the paper, tied by red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid" circular datestamp on small piece of embossed envelope, Honolulu datestamp and San Francisco orange-red "8" in circle rate handstamp struck over area where stamp is missing (proving the damage occurred before the cover was postmarked in Honolulu)

A FASCINATING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 13-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY TIED ON PIECE BY THE HONOLULU CIRCULAR DATESTAMP.

1009   ImageHAWAII, 1852, 13c Blue, "H.I. & U.S. Postage" (4). Crocker Type II -- the righthand stamp in the setting of two -- margins on three sides, bottom margin added with frameline painted in, closed tear at right, small thins, cancelled by small part of red Honolulu datestamp at lower right and by nearly full strike of orange-red "8" in circle rate handstamp of San Francisco

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY TWO HAWAIIAN MISSIONARIES ARE RECORDED WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO "8" CENTS RATE HANDSTAMP. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH THE COMPLETELY-STRUCK NUMERAL.

The 13c "H.I. & U.S. Postage" Missionary was issued to clear up confusion caused by the earlier "Hawaiian Postage" Missionary. The 13c stamps actually prepaid postage of two different countries -- a unique and remarkable function in worldwide philately -- and after receiving complaints that the first "Hawaiian Postage" 13c stamps were not being accepted as prepayment by receiving post offices, Postmaster Whitney revised the label to read "H.I. & U.S. Postage."

The "8" cents handstamp was applied at San Francisco to prepaid letters to indicate that the 6c U.S. postage and 2c ship captain's fee had been paid. It is usually found on the cover itself; however, as evidenced by this stamp and one other part-strike on piece, the marking was inadvertently struck on Missionaries on occasion.

1011   ImageHAWAII, 1852, 13c Blue, "H.I. & U.S. Postage" (4). Crocker Types I and II, originally a horizontal pair used together, separated and rejoined, left stamp Type I, right stamp Type II, margins clear of framelines to slightly in, large at top, bold 7-bar grid cancels struck three times clearly tying pair together, in addition there is a faint red San Francisco circular datestamp, internal tears on both stamps at top and center have been sealed, a few wrinkles and tiny faults

FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 1852 13-CENT "H.I. & U.S. POSTAGE" STAMP, ONE OF TWO KNOWN MULTIPLES OF THE ENTIRE MISSIONARY ISSUE AND THE ONLY MULTIPLE AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.

This pair was part of Henry J. Crocker's plating study of the Missionaries, which also included the 13c "Hawaiian Postage" strip on cover, which was subsequently in the Honolulu Advertiser collection and is now part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum. (Siegel Sale 769, lot 29). Together they represent the only known multiples of the Missionaries.

Little is known of the origin of this pair, though it is possible that it emanated from the Dawson find and was removed from a damaged cover. The two positions show an interesting skewed alignment of the framelines. Type II (the right stamp) has the characteristic missing period after the "U" of "U.S."

Our census of Hawaii No. 4, published in Part 1 of the Honolulu Advertiser catalogue and available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/HI4/HI4.pdf , contains 35 used stamps off cover or on piece plus nine covers.

Siegel Census Nos. 4-I-CAN-167 and 4-II-CAN-168. Ex Henry J. Crocker, Frank C. Atherton (acquired in 1930), Honolulu Academy of Arts and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1995 P.F. certificate.

The Scott Catalogue notes that "values are for examples with minor damage that has been skillfully repaired." These stamps do not have any paper additions or repainting. The Scott value quoted here is for two singles. (Image)
