2305° og Image10c Milky Blue, Frameline (10a). Position 89, small part original gum, frameline complete on all four sides, radiant color and crisp impression

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS WIDELY REGARDED AS THE FINEST UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10-CENT FRAMELINE ISSUE. ONLY TWO UNUSED EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED SHOWING ALL FOUR FRAMELINES COMPLETE, AND THE OTHER HAS A SIGNIFICANT FAULT. A PHENOMENAL RARITY AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE STATES CONDITION RARITIES IN EXISTENCE.

The most important characteristic of Scott 10 is the frameline around each stamp. The lines were engraved on the plate and served as a guide for the siderographer when aligning the die images to make the plate. Each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions, so the existence of four-frameline copies is exceedingly rare. Only two are recorded in unused condition. The other has a significant thin spot.

This was originally the lefthand stamp in a pair discovered by Earl Weatherly. Weatherly sold the pair to Earl Antrim, who put his usual green rubber handstamp on back, which unfortunately bled through to the front. The bleeding was far worse on the righthand stamp. The pair was separated by noted dealer Jack Molesworth and it received a 1965 P.F. certificate stating "Genuine, with some original gum and a stain". The "stain" was caused by the handstamp, which has since been professionally removed. The stamp has a 2010 P.F. certificate as "Genuine, unused, with small part o.g."

Ex Weatherly, Antrim and Birkinbine. With 1965 C.S.A., 1966 and 2010 P.F. certificates. Accompanied by notes from Robert Wiseman and John Birkinbine describing the history of this stamp. Scott Catalogue notes "Unused stamps showing four complete framelines are exceedingly rare (only two recorded), and the sound example is valued at $35,000.00" (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL USED EXAMPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10-CENT FRAMELINE ISSUE.

The most important characteristic of Scott 10 is the frameline around each stamp. Each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions, so the existence of such complete framelines is rare.
