VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE NEW ORLEANS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A COVER WITH A CONFEDERATE PACKET BOAT MARKING.

According to the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, the General Quitman is believed to have been built at New Albany, Indiana, in 1859 for a New Orleans ship owner. It was "one of the best and most powerful boats on the river" in 1862 and one of the last to escape from the city on April 24, evacuating upriver "a good many ladies, some officers, and some ordnance stores." The General Quitman continued to serve the Confederate Army as a troop and supply ship on the western rivers until war's end. It passed to private ownership and sank at New Texas Landing, near Morganza La., on October 23, 1868. (Image)
