Jan. 15, 1862" circular datestamp and "FREE" in circle handstamp on red and blue Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and Hospital illustrated cover depicting illustration of hospital building, soldiers and civilians, to Freetown Mass., "Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, foot of Washington Avenue, Phila." imprint at left, free franked by William D. Kelley (Congressman-Pa.), 3c postage was free but the 1c carrier fee had to be prepaid, minor edgewear

EXTREMELY FINE. A PHENOMENAL ILLUSTRATED COVER FOR THE PHILADELPHIA REFRESHMENT SALOON AND VOLUNTEER HOSPITAL WITH A COMBINATION OF POSTAGE FREE FRANK AND ONE-CENT CARRIER FEE PREPAID BY STAMP.

According to the Kantor book, the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and Hospital was open from May 17, 1861, to August 28, 1865. "Troops passing thru Philadelphia to and from Washington could get refreshments, a hot meal and a place to rest on the way. The home-cooked meals were a welcome relief after the hardtack and worm-infested meat usually fried to a crisp in bacon grease. By the time it closed after four years of operation, over 600,000 meals meals had been served and over $85,000 raised in contributions."

Feb. 10, 1862" circular datestamp on blue Volunteer Refreshment Saloon illustrated cover depicting view of saloon skillfully lithographed in blue by W. Boell of Philadelphia, a marvelous detailed depiction of building, marching soldiers, civilians and railway cars, to Union Valley N.Y., with 2pp soldier's letter datelined "Union Hospital February 8th 1862", very slight wear at edges, short sealed opening tear at lower right

Jun. 15" double-circle datestamp where it entered the mails, addressed to Mount Holly N.J., cover with few trivial edge tears of little significance, also incl. original enclosure containing 26 pages of letters dated between May 23 and June 3 written by Commodore John R. Goldsborough who was the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Colorado to his wife, fascinating content of letters covers a variety of topics such as other ships in the area (U.S.S. Kennebec and U.S.S.
