Blue oval handstamp struck on back of folded letter originating at San Francisco Jan. 7, 1855, addressed to Sheffield, England, carried under separate cover by Wells Fargo to New York City, manuscript "Paid thro" on the face but treated as unpaid with "New York 21" debit datestamp by American packet, British "1/-" shilling due handstamp, "Wells, Fargo Bankers New York", Liverpool and Sheffield handstamps on back, Very Fine, reported to be the earliest known Wells, Fargo & Co. cover to a foreign destination, (according to Rumsey sale), the "Bankers" oval was applied at the New York office on express mail received from California (Image)
