1718 c Image"Union City Express." Manuscript endorsement at top of blue Dec. 22, 1854 datelined folded letter from Alvarado, Alameda County Cal. to San Francisco, carried by Wells, Fargo to San Francisco with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express San Francisco" oval handstamp, delivered locally by Swift's City Express ("Swift & Co." in manuscript), light wear along central file fold and small piece missing from back

VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL TRIPLE-CONJUNCTIVE WESTERN EXPRESS COVER, HANDLED BY UNION CITY EXPRESS, WELLS FARGO AND SWIFT.

The Union City Express operated in Alameda County. Union City was the early name for Alvarado (which became Union City once again in 1959). The Thomas book (Vol. 2, page 734) states that while there is no definitive proof that Swift's City Express was part of Swift & Co., most believe both services were operated by the same person.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES OF THE VERA'S EXPRESS FRANK ARE RECORDED. THE CONDITION OF THIS EXAMPLE PLACES IT AMONG THE TWO FINEST.

Joseph Numa Vera operated an express between Oroville and Marysville, connecting with Wells, Fargo & Company. Only five examples of this distinctive frank are known, of which this and an example offered in our Sale 896 (lot 707) are in the finest condition. Two of the five have additional Wells, Fargo & Co. franks. One cover has a manuscript "July 1860" date, and another has a "Wells, Fargo & Co. Marysville Apr. 23" datestamp.
