Strip of six with 2c-1c-1c-1c-2c-3c denominations, representing a complete row from the sheet of 60, without gum as issued, full to large margins all around, couple light vertical creases (as always), pos. 1 small margin nick at left, pos. 3 small scuff

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEPTIONAL RARITY OF TELEGRAPH AND CLASSICAL PHILATELY. THIS CITY & SUBURBAN TELEGRAPH COMPANY STRIP REPRESENTS A FULL HORIZONTAL ROW FROM THE SHEET OF 60 STAMPS, AND IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BORN COLLECTION.

The New York City & Suburban Printing Telegraph Co., organized in 1855, was the first private telegraph company in the world to issue stamps. According to the Kramer book, it was not profitable and its line was leased to Henry Bentley (of Bentley's Dispatch). Bentley experimented with a system of message depositories, for which these stamps were intended. The concept quickly failed and the stamps went unused for the most part.

In 1935 the Economist Stamp Company acquired a complete sheet of 60 stamps ($1.00 face value) and divided it into strips and singles, including a multiple of the bottom two rows (ex Stephen Rich), which reportedly has since been broken up. There was an often repeated story that this sheet was the only source of the City & Suburban stamps. However, the Born collection proves this was not the case. The rows comprise 2c-1c-1c-1c-2c-3c denominations, meaning one sheet would contain only ten 3c stamps. The Born collection contains ten 3c stamps and there are examples outside the collection, so clearly more than one sheet was found. All denominations are scarce and se-tenant multiples are quite rare. This is the only complete row located in Power Search.

VERY FINE. A RARE ESSENTIALLY SOUND SE-TENANT STRIP OF ALL THREE VALUES OF THE CITY & SUBURBAN TELEGRAPH COMPANY ISSUE.

As the preceding lot notes, se-tenant multiples of all three values are rare -- particularly with full margins in any condition approaching soundness. While this strip has a vertical crease, that is normal for the soft wove paper used for this issue. The rows of the New York City & Suburban issue comprise 2c-1c-1c-1c-2c-3c denominations. This multiple comes from the right three positions in the row of six stamps -- the only positions that can yield a se-tenant multiple of all three denominations.
