Mar 27" (1849) circular datestamp, matching "5" rate handstamp, original contents refer to fatal cases of cholera, cover with some splits at folds from thick enclosure, few nicks and small stain, still Fine and extremely rare, the listing example and illustrated in 1993 ASCC, No. 241, rarity 9, though incorrectly showing the date as May 25, meaning the earliest known use should be moved back two months, ex Hahn (Image)

III (26), slight oxidation, tied by "Lexington Mo. Jul. 11, 1859" circular datestamp, slightly reduced at left, appears Very Fine, accompanied by a Very Fine second cover of the same design that did not go through the mails, this telegraph company (which was leased in Sep. 1860 to the Missouri & Western Telegraph Co.) with its line over the Central Route was closely linked to the Pony Express, one of the most famous Pony Express covers -- free franked by William H. Imprint on orange-buff cover addressed to Denver, no postal markings, fresh and Very Fine, a rare design which is unlisted in the 1993 ASCC, according to The Telegraph Age (Vol. 24, 1906), B. F. Woodward of Denver organized the United States and Mexico Telegraph Company and built the line from Denver to Santa Fe, although it was projected to extend to Mexico City the line was sold to Western Union before completion (Image)

Express M.R. 8154" circular handstamp on yellow cover to New Orleans, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine and scarce, U.S. mail route 8154 on the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad line between New Orleans (Algiers) and Brashear La. was under U.S. military control from July 1, 1862, until February 1, 1866; its operation, with a steamboat connection between Berwicks Bay and Galveston, was essential to mail service; the U.S. mail contract with Baldwin as agent was awarded to the NOO&GW on May 26, 1866, at $100 per mile per year, the circular handstamp is found on covers carried on the NOO&GW line between January and May 1866 (Image)
