Local Posts: Bouton's thru Briggs
Lot Sym. Lot Description
666 c ImageBouton's Manhattan Express, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Pink (17L1). Large margins, gum stain, uncancelled as usual, used on brown cover to local street address, pencil "WB-- Deliver this without fail this day. Dean" and "Paid Bouton" printed in identical pencil, with Mar. 1, 1848, letter enclosure, couple minor stains in cover, Very Fine, one of seven or eight reported examples and one of only four covers, the Manhattan Express was operated by William V. Barr as early as October 1845 until sometime soon after Valentine's Day 1847, when Barr sold out to John R. Bouton, ex Schwartz and Geisler, with 2000 P.F. certificate that describes the "Paid Bouton" pencil notation as "non-contemporary" (an opinion with which we vehemently disagree), Scott Retail $4,500.00 (Image)

Large margins to clear at right, red "Paid/Bouton" two-line handstamp just ties to cover at right, removed and re-affixed with hinge on 1848 folded letter to Plymouth Center Conn., red "New-York 5cts. 8 Sep." integral-rate circular datestamp, stamp with a couple tiny flaws and some edge toning on cover, appears Fine, this was offered in the Hall sale as not belonging to the cover, the stamp had become a bit shifted before that time and was covering the tying portion of the Bouton's handstamp, subsequent to the sale it was soaked to reveal the tie and re-affixed with a hinge in its presumed original position, on-cover examples of this first "Rough and Ready" issue are very rare, Scott Retail for on-cover $10,000.00 (Image)

672 c ImageBouton's City Dispatch Post, New York N.Y. Balance of six covers, two with No. 18L2 adhesive, one stamp has a peculiar "erased" area at center, upon which the cancel is struck -- one wonders if this stamp was re-used or if the sender did not agree with Bouton's pro-Taylor politics (ex Golden), four others are stampless with Bouton City Dispatch Post red ovals, two of the stampless with toning or edgewear, overall Fine group (Image)

Full to large margins, very poor (late?) impression with only part of the design visible, uncancelled, affixed to buff cover to Saxton's River Vt., the sender's "Paid All" notation at bottom left is unusual and seems to support the stamp's use on this cover, trace of New York datestamp at upper right, but no regular postage, a Fine example of this rare stamp -- approximately 12-15 examples are known, ex Golden and Geisler, with 1999 P.F. certificate (Image)
