1253 E Image1917, 1c and 2c Entires, "T 1-c" Surcharges (U1 var - U2 var). Considered to be War Tax essays, 1c with just some minor soiling, 2c with some staining

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THESE ARE THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE WAR TAX ESSAYS.

In October 1917 the U.S. Congress approved a 1c increase in the postal rate to help defray costs of World War I. The Canal Zone Director of Posts requested that a surcharge for stamped envelopes be made, showing a "T" for tax and 1c. These two essays were prepared, each with a different font. Prior to implementation, it was determined the Act of Congress did not apply to the Canal Zone, and these surcharges were never issued.
