VERY FINE. A RARE PAIR WITH TOP STAMP THE "CANAL" ONLY VARIETY AND BOTTOM STAMP "ZONE CANAL". ONLY 20 SUCH PAIRS WERE PRINTED.

1156 ogbl Image1926, 5c Dark Blue, Inverted Overprint (86c). Bottom left selvage block of four, the inverted overprint split and also in the selvage, top stamps h.r., bottom stamps Mint N.H., proof-like color and impression

FINE. A VISUALLY STRIKING BLOCK OF THE 1926 5-CENT WITH INVERTED OVERPRINT. ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE OVERPRINT ERROR PIECES OF THIS ISSUE.

According to Canal Zone Stamps, these errors were created because the press was set up as a 100-subject overprint form to accommodate narrow selvage at bottom. When one pane was mistakenly placed on the press in an inverted orientation, the top row missed receiving the overprint, which was printed instead on the wide selvage at bottom. This bottom-margin block of inverts shows the misplaced impressions in the selvage. The pair in the following lot shows the missing overprint on the top row.

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS DRAMATIC ERROR. ONLY TEN PAIRS ARE POSSIBLE.

The block in the previous lot shows the effect at the bottom of the same sheet. (Image)
