Wonderfully fresh and well-centered example, tied by clear blue Peking seal on back of cover to Paris, France, with matching blue "I.C. of Customs, Peking Jul 22 81" double-circle datestamp, sent via the French Post Office in Shanghai where it received France 5c Green on Greenish and two singles of 15c Blue Sage Issues (78, 92; Yvert 75, 90), each tied by dotted "5104" cancel with matching "Shanghai, Chine 29 Juil 81" datestamp, cover originated from the "Legation de la Republique Francaise, Pekin" with large blue cachet on back, Tientsin and Shanghai Customs transit backstamps, Paris receiving datestamp, cover with tear at top left and opening tear on backflap going thru blue cachet of little importance

VERY FINE. A PHENOMENAL COVER BEARING THE 1878 3-CENT LARGE DRAGON FIRST ISSUE OF CHINA ON COVER SENT VIA THE FRENCH POST OFFICE IN SHANGHAI TO PARIS. A RARITY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.

This outstanding China and France mixed-franking cover is believed to be one of the few known bearing the Large Dragon and Sage issues. A cover of exceptional importance and deserving of a key role in an award-winning exhibit.

608 c ImageCHINA, 1897, 2c on 3c Red Revenue, Small Numeral (79; Chan 84). Tied by "Customs, Soochow Jun 6, 1897" double-circle datestamp on long cover to Tientsin, light blue Tientsin arrival backstamp dated Jun, 13, cover with some wear and tears on reverse

FINE. A RARE POSTALLY-USED CHINA 2-CENT SMALL NUMERAL RED REVENUE ON COVER.

On February 20, 1897, a new national postal service was inaugurated. Prior to this, an order was made with a printer in Japan for the new stamps. Unfortunately, the printer was unable to supply the stamps in time for the inauguration. Prior to this in 1896, 650,000 Red Revenues had been ordered for a new proposed taxation. Quickly abandoned due to public outcry, these stamps lay dormant in Shanghai. They were quickly pressed into service with new overprints for postal use. (Image)
