252 ogbl Image1c Buff, Re-Issue (123). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, beautiful intense shade and impression on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF THE 1875 RE-ISSUE OF THE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL -- NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE MORE COMMON 1880 SPECIAL PRINTING.

Although the 1c 1880 Special Printing (Scott 133, 133a) exists in large multiples, the 1875 Re-Issue is extremely rare in block form. Using Power Search, we located three other blocks, but this appears to be tied for "finest known" with the block in our sale of the Alan B. Whitman collection (Sale 968).

Ex Bechtel, Zoellner and "Lafayette". With 2003 P.F. certificate. In our opinion, the Scott premium for a block versus four singles ($3,500.00 vs. $2,200.00) does not accurately reflect its scarcity, nor is it commensurate with the double and triple premiums assigned to the higher-denomination blocks. 253 ogbl Image2c Brown, Re-Issue (124). Block of four, original gum, deep rich color and detailed impression

VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE.

We estimate that no more than seven or eight blocks of the 2c 1869 Re-Issue exist, including two blocks of six, two sheet-margin blocks, and three blocks of four. We have offered only one other since our 1998 Zoellner sale.

Ex Sinkler, Hetherington and Anderson. With 1970 and 1992 P.F. certificates. In our opinion, the Scott premium for a block versus four singles ($4,500.00 vs. $2,600.00) does not accurately reflect its scarcity, nor is it commensurate with the double and triple premiums assigned to the higher-denomination blocks. 255 ogbl Image10c Yellow, Re-Issue (127). Block of four, original gum, narrow strips of hinge used to reinforce some minor perf separations, intense color, bright and fresh

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED BLOCKS OF THE 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE. A REMARKABLE RARITY.

Our records (confirmed with Michael Laurence) contain four 10c Re-Issue blocks, as follows: 1) Extremely Fine centering, small margin tear, ex Worthington, Caspary, Lilly, 1969 Rarities sale (Sale 350, lot 98), Bechtel, Zoellner, currently in Gross collection; 2) Fine centering, 1972 Rarities sale (Sale 409, lot 84); 3) Extremely Fine centering, ex Lozier, Sinkler, 1974 Rarities sale (Sale 448, lot 84), 1981 Rarities sale (Sale 579, lot 184), ex Whitman (Sale 968, lot 165); and 4) Extremely Fine centering, the block offered here, 1980 Rarities sale (Sale 560, lot 150) and 1981 Rarities sale (Sale 579, lot 185), ex "Lafayette".
