1868 og ImageCity & Suburban Telegraph Co., 1c-3c Black, Se-Tenant Strip (6T1-6T3). Strip of four with 1c-1c-2c-3c denominations, without gum as issued, full to large margin except touching at right, crisp impression, a couple light creases (as always) and small tear at top of second 1c

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE SE-TENANT STRIP OF ALL THREE VALUES OF THE CITY & SUBURBAN TELEGRAPH COMPANY ISSUE.

The City & Suburban, organized in 1855, was the first private telegraph company in the world to issue stamps. It was not profitable and its line was leased to Henry Bentley (of Bentley's Dispatch). Bentley experimented with a system of message depositories, for which these stamps were intended. The concept quickly failed and the stamps went unused for the most part. The Economist Stamp Company acquired a complete sheet of 60 stamps and divided it into strips and singles. The rows comprise 2-1-1-1-2-3 cent denominations, creating se-tenant multiples, which are quite rare.

Ex Lilly (where acquired by the collector). With 1949 P.F. certificate submitted by Lilly himself. Scott Retail as 1c-2c-3c strip plus additional 1c (Image)

1869 og ImageCity & Suburban Telegraph Co., 1c-3c Black, Se-Tenant Strip (6T1-6T3). Strip of all three values, without gum as issued, full to ample margins all around, sharp impression, two light vertical creases affecting the 1c and 2c stamps

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE SE-TENANT STRIP OF ALL THREE VALUES OF THE CITY & SUBURBAN TELEGRAPH COMPANY ISSUE.

As the preceding lot notes, se-tenant multiples come from one sheet of 60 that was cut into singles and se-tenant strips, making strips of all three values exceedingly rare. (Image)

1872 ngbl ImageColusa, Lake & Mendocino Telegraph Co., 1876, 5c Black (7T1). Complete pane of ten, "P.L.W." handstamp in blue, unused (no gum), Pos. 1 with sealed tear at top, faint stain affects three stamps in the top row

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE FULL PANE OF THE COLUSA, LAKE & MENDOCINO FIVE-CENT TELEGRAPH STAMP. ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF TELEGRAPH STAMP COLLECTING.

The Colusa, Lake & Mendocino was incorporated in 1875, with 260 miles of line extended through the counties of Colusa, Lake, Mendocino and Napa. Three stamps were issued for prepayment -- 5c, 10c and 25c. Only one example each of the 10c and 25c is known, and the 5c is very scarce. This unique pane of ten is an important Telegraph stamp rarity.
