419 c Image20c Green (13). Large margins, crisp impression, tied by light strike of Marshall Tex. circular datestamp on ca. 1863-64 Crutcher & Co., Agents for Phelps, Parke & Co. Wagon Manufacturers, illustrated advertising buff cover to San Antonio Tex., addressed in care of Capt. William O. Crutcher (member of 48th Mississippi Infantry), slightly reduced and some edge tears, slightly extended along left edge

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USE OF THE 20-CENT GREEN ON AN ELABORATE ADVERTISING COVER FOR A VICKSBURG-BASED WAGON MANUFACTURING AGENT -- THE ENVELOPE WAS CARRIED TO TEXAS AND MAILED THERE.

Phelps, Parke & Co. were wagon manufacturers who started business under that name in 1857 and continued until 1874, when it was incorporated as the Pittsburgh Wagon Works. William Crutcher, to whose care the cover is addressed, became a Confederate officer during the war. This was probably mailed by a family member who carried a supply of envelopes to Texas after the fall of Vicksburg in July 1863. (Image)
