A REMARKABLE USE OF A BLOCK OF THE 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE. WE HAVE SEARCHED WTHOUT SUCCESS FOR ANOTHER BLOCK ON COVER.

A review using Power Search produced one used block of the 20c General Issue in our sales since 1992 and all Rarities sales, and that block is off cover. This block on a piece with the address intact is possibly the closest thing to a block on cover that exists.

May 8, 1865" double-circle datestamp and "Due 10" straightline

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 20-CENT DIAGONAL BISECT USED VERY LATE IN THE WAR TO MAKE UP THE 10-CENT RATE.

After the Union gained control of the Mississippi River, the Confederacy found it difficult to supply stamps to the area west of the river. Examples in such pristine condition are scarce. This is one of the latest (possibly the latest) uses of a 20c bisect.

Ex Judd, Bilden and Hill. With 1990 P.F. certificate. (Image)
