The Brandon Collection of Confederate States, Part 2 continued...

Confederate Patriotics: Cannons thru Soldiers, States
Lot Sym. Lot Description
188 c Image5c Dark Green, Stone 1 (1b). Horizontal pair, large margins all around, wonderful deep shade and early impression, faint pre-use diagonal crease at lower left, tied by bold "Pensacola Fla. Nov. 12" (1861) circular datestamp on buff cover to Greenville S.C. with red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag and Cannon Patriotic design with "Georgia Battery, Griffin Light Guard, Pensacola, Fla." Regimental Imprint (CN-4), H. P. Hill imprint, minor opening tear at top right, small mended nicks at upper and lower right corners

VERY FINE AND HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE EARLY REGIMENTAL PATRIOTIC FROM PENSACOLA, FLORIDA. ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVERS.

With original letter enclosure datelined "Camp Stephens, Pensacola, Nov. 12th /61" and written by a soldier to his mother. Obviously well-educated and far more articulate than the average Confederate soldier, the writer used four pages to wax eloquently about the war, but it is early and he had yet to see any fighting. Excerpts include: On the Federal landing at Beaufort, "Oh Ma it makes me shudder to think how Carolina blood will flow ere those infernal scoundrels are driven from our beloved soil."; On the North, "I have no doubt but what we have left enough brave men at home to teach Lincoln's abolitions hordes the madness and folly of attacking us in our homes and to let them know that it is just as much of an impossibility for Yankees and Carolinians to exist on the same soil as it is for them to free our negroes."; and continued fervent patriotism with many references to spilling blood and a final battle cry "I wear that Palmetto Tree on the front of my cap and I am going to wear it there when I get into a fight and let the Yanks know that I am not afraid to own my native state."

With 1965 P.F. certificate. Ex Birkinbine (Image)

189 c Image"Manassas Junction, Company B, 7th Regiment Louisiana Vol." Docketing or endorsement on back of cover addressed to Baton Rouge La. with red and blue Cannon Firing Left with 12-Star Confederate Flag and Verse Patriotic design (CN-2), "Remember Sumter, Bethel and Manassas" slogan, soldier's endorsement at top from a member of the 7th Regt., Louisiana Volunteers (the "Pelican" Regiment), and pencil "10" apparent rate but no postmark, accompanied by original enclosure, a lettersheet with Cannon and 12-Star Confederate Flag design, Starke & Cordozo imprint, datelined Sep. 5, 1861, interesting contents related to battle and "Yankees within 14 miles", cover with some minor soiling

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN WITH THE STAR ABOVE THE CANNON AND FLAG AND 'REMEMBER SUMTER, BETHEL AND MANASSAS" SLOGAN.

The firm of Starke & Cordozo was based in Richmond, Virginia. They produced a variety of patriotic envelopes and lettersheets during the Civil War. Although this cover does not have their imprint, the presence of the lettersheet with the Starke & Cordozo imprint suggests that that both came from them. (Image)
