158 c Image5c Green, 5c Blue, Stone 2 (1, 4). Combination of Green and Blue printings, former slightly cut into, latter with full margins, usual faint gum stains, tied by "Goldsborough N.C. Jan. 23" (1863) circular datestamp on 10-Star Confederate Flag with Blank Streamer and Verse Patriotic cover (F10-11) to Fayetteville N.C., black on brown envelope, Bonitz imprint, the initial "E" is on the flag (addressed to an Evans)

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER WITH A REMARKABLE GREEN AND BLUE LITHOGRAPHED ISSUE FRANKING.

The use of patriotic envelopes began to decline in 1863 as the war dragged on and supplies became scarce. This envelope demonstrates the move away from high-quality paper and colored printing to crudely-manufactured envelopes and simple monochrome printing. The combined use of 5c Lithograph stamps from the Green (first) and Blue (second) printings is quite unusual on any kind of envelope, and is especially rare on a patriotic cover. (Image)
