246 c ImageGoliad Tex., 5c Black (29X1). Type I without Clark's name printed at left, faint trace of Clark's signature in red, huge margins at sides, clear at top and bottom, neat pen dots cancel, tiny thins at bottom but otherwise fresh and crisp.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY EIGHT GOLIAD 5-CENT TYPE I PROVISIONAL STAMPS ARE KNOWN, INCLUDING ONE ON COVER IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY COLLECTION AND ONE ON A COVER FRONT.

The Confederate postmaster of Goliad was John (Jno.) A. Clarke, whose name was signed by hand on stamps of the first provisional issue and set in type as part of the setting for the second issue. This example had been recorded as the only Type I without Clark's signature, but a trace of it is evident under magnification. Clarke served as Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the Paine Female Institute, which later became Goliad College. He signed an oath of allegiance after the war on January 9, 1866 (an image of the document is available at www.fold3.com ).

August Dietz reported that the Goliad provisional stamps and the similar stamps of Helena, Texas, were printed at the offices of the Goliad Messenger. The editor of this newspaper was Reverend Alexander F. Cox (his middle initial was incorrectly stated as "M." by Dietz). The publisher was R. W. Peirce. The November 12, 1864, edition of the Goliad Messenger is available on-line at http://texashistory.unt.edu . Reverend Cox died on April 5, 1897, and his obituary appeared in the Weekly Picayune (April 9, 1897).

The Goliad provisionals were printed from typeset forms in denominations of 5c and 10c. The Type I setting, without Clarke's name, was used to print stamps issued prior to the Type II setting, probably in 1861 and 1862. The Type II setting was probably made in 1863.

Ex Hessel. "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson) backstamp. With 2006 P.F. certificate.

247   ImageGoliad Tex., 10c Black (29X4). Type I without Clark's name printed at left and signed "Clarke P M" in red ink, the paper has a slight tint to it and the owner collected it as rose paper but we feel it is more of a grayish-white, faintly cancelled if at all, appears unused, full margins to just in at top right, small flaws including sealed tear and small repair to bottom left corner

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT TYPE I GOLIAD POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL, WHICH APPEARS UNUSED. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL POSTMASTERS' PROVISIONALS, WITH ONLY FOUR RECORDED.

The Goliad provisionals were printed from typeset forms in denominations of 5c and 10c. The Type I setting, without Clarke's name, was used to print stamps issued prior to the Type II setting, probably in 1861 and 1862. The Type II setting was probably made in 1863. For the first setting the stamps were signed by hand in either red or black ink.

248   ImageGoliad Tex., 10c Black (29X4). Type I without Clark's name printed at left and signed "Clarke P M", full margins to just in, blue wash cancel, few flaws including surface scuffs, thins causing small hole, small nick and some toning

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 10-CENT TYPE I GOLIAD POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL POSTMASTERS' PROVISIONALS. ONLY FOUR ARE RECORDED, INCLUDING TWO ON ROSE PAPER AND TWO ON WHITE PAPER.

The Goliad provisionals were printed from typeset forms in denominations of 5c and 10c. The Type I setting, without Clarke's name, was used to print stamps issued prior to the Type II setting, probably in 1861 and 1862. The Type II setting was probably made in 1863. 249   ImageGoliad Tex., 5c Black on Gray (29X6). Type II with Clark's name printed at left, ample margins to touching the ornaments at bottom and lower left, short manuscript cancel, couple small thins and small repair bottom left

FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL RARITY. ONLY ONE PAIR AND TWO SINGLES ARE RECORDED OF THE 5-CENT GOLIAD TYPE II ON GRAY PAPER.

Despite the Scott Catalogue listings, which indicate that this stamp is of lesser rarity than the 5c Type I, only five examples of the 5c Type II with Clark's printed name are recorded, versus eight of the Type I. It was probably issued in 1863 or 1864, during a shortage of regular issues. At that time the basic letter rate was 10c, explaining the great rarity of 5c stamps.

Our records contain four examples of 29X6 (5c Black on Gray) and a single example of 29X8 (5c Black on Dark Blue, offered in lot 251). The 29X6 stamps are: 1-2) pair with one stamp showing the "GOILAD" error, ex Caspary; 3) pen cancel, 1998 Rarities sale; and 4) pen cancel, small repair at bottom left, ex Hessel, the example offered here. No 5c Type II Gray Paper stamps are known on cover.
