Two folded letters and parts of two covers, each bearing pair and addressed to Caroline Simon in Comfort Tex., each tied by San Antonio Tex. circular datestamp, written by Ferdinand Simon, who was one of the few German Unionists to have survived the so-called Battle of the Nueces River of Aug. 10, 1862, few faults, still Fine, interesting, the German Unionists in Texas were made to feel very unwelcome, many left for New Orleans or other areas to join Union forces, after conscription a group left for Mexico to join Union forces but were followed and attacked by Confederates, none of the Unionists surrendered and Simon was captured after being shot thru the ribs, most of the wounded were killed by the Confederates but Simon was not, these were written while he was in jail, where he remained until the end of the war, accompanied by article describing the battle (Image)
