4063 c More of the Calvet M. Hahn Collection of New York Straightlines. Approximately 120 folded letters or covers from a wide variety of towns, almost all with straightline town markings, 1820's to 1840's unless noted otherwise, quality of strikes varies but among the clear strikes on clean attractive covers are "SCHEN*FEB*9" (two, incl. 1797 "Free" to member of Congress), "Lansingburgh June 26" (1794), "MANORVILLE NY NOV 21" on small embossed cover to Canada with red exchange office handstamp, several varieties of "NEW YORK" and "N.Y.", "HUDSON" (two-line with dates), "Northampton N.Y." with date below, "ONEIDA N.Y. DEC. 12", "PEMBROKE N.Y." (red), "STILLWATER N.Y./APR 19", "UNADILLA N.Y." (on bright blue folded letter), "VAN BUREN HARBOR N.Y.", "NEWARK VALLEY N.Y." (different styles), and many more, a marvelous study of postal markings from the first half of the 19th Century, a period of tremendous economic and population growth in the United States, with a corresponding proliferation of post offices and postal markings throughout New York State, the "straightlines" are the quintessential markings of the pre-stamp era, and this is a formidable holding with at least 50 covers with a retail value of $50 to $100 each -- worth careful evaluation (PDF available from our website)
