Jul. 23" circular datestamp on cover to Philadelphia, with original enclosure datelined "Bakers Island" with longitude and latitude listed, bold "Removed" handstamp, interesting contents regarding loading guano and difficulty with waves, sender is leaving soon for Howland Island, signed "Your truly, John Ross, Care of C.A. Williams Esq. Honolulu H.I.", some edgewear affects stamp, some toning, otherwise Fine, rare use, this must have been sent in 1867 since the U.S. Guano Co. relinquished their rights to an English firm in 1868, Baker's Island is 1,700 miles southwest of Honolulu, almost halfway between Hawaii and Australia, this has been a territory of the U.S. since 1857 and so is one of the earliest U.S. territories (Image)
