2796   ImageCHINA, 1968, 8f Red, Blue & Bistre, "The Whole Country is Red" (999A; Yang W14). Fresh colors, neat strike of cancel at bottom right leaves design clearly visible, slight crease and small thin spots (used examples of this rarity almost always have minor faults)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USED EXAMPLE OF THE "WHOLE COUNTRY IS RED" STAMP, WHICH WAS QUICKLY WITHDRAWN FROM USE.

The stamp features a map of China with the words "The Whole Country is Red" in Chinese. A worker, farmer and soldier are also depicted, holding copies of the book Quotations from Chairman Mao. The face value is 8 fen, which was equivalent to one U.S. cent.

According to Wikipedia, this stamp, issued in Canton, was withdrawn during its first day of distribution. The official reason given was that the Spratly and Paracel Islands are missing, and that some borders are incorrectly drawn. However, Taiwan appears in white instead of red, and this is widely considered the true reason for its withdrawal. An editor at Sinomaps Press noticed the mistakes and reported it to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

A small number were sold and legitimately used during the brief time they were available for sale. Virtually all used examples are faulty to some extent. This example has only very minor faults and is one of the most attractive of the used copies extant. (Image)
