2274 ng ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1840, 1p "V.R." Official (O1; SG V1). Lettered L-C, unused (no gum), full balanced margins all around, rich shade and a crisp detailed impression

VERY FINE. A MOST IMPRESSIVE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE "V.R." OFFICIAL, WHICH IS ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF GREAT BRITAIN.

Right after these stamps were delivered, it was decided not to use this special stamp for government offices. All but 21 sheets were destroyed. Of these, 13 sheets were used on Postmaster's Notices and one sheet was sent to Roland Hill for cancellation experiments.
