2188 ng ImageGREAT BRITAIN, 1862, 3p Rose, White Dots Under Side Ornaments (37b; SG 78). Abnormal plate 3, lettered E-I, unused (no gum), partially reperforated at top and right (as is often the case with the Abnormal stamps)

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE STAMP. LESS THAN FIVE EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED.

The printers submitted up to six imperforate sheets of each new plate for approval. One sheet was selected as the imprimatur and put in the archives. The additional sheets were usually perforated and put in the Post Office stock for sale. They are normally indistinguishable from the regularly printed stamps. However, some of the plates were never subsequently printed, leaving the one to five perforated sheets as the only examples. These "abnormal" printings (such as the stamp offered here) are among Great Britain's rarest stamps.

With 2007 B.P.A. certificate. SG £40,000 (Image)
