Dateline on enclosure with Remember the Maine multicolored patriotic design, matching cover with Hong Kong 10c Victoria tied by "Hong Kong JY 5, 1898" circular datestamp, addressed to Oakland Ore., purple "U.S. Consulate Hong Kong", San Francisco and receiving backstamps, great contents incl. "We captured about 65 Spaniards and 3 or 4 hundred guns and several thousand rounds of ammunition... We can see the masts of the Spanish ships that Dewey sunk still sticking out of the water", cover with some tears and toning, still Very Fine and rare Spanish-American War cover posted in Hong Kong, with its original letter containing a reference to Admiral Dewey's victory over the Spanish navy at Manila Bay in May 1898 (Image)

FINE-VERY FINE. A SCARCE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE 10-CENT TYPE II WITH PHILIPPINES OVERPRINT.

The 10c Type II is one of the scarcest of the Philippines 1899 Overprinted Issue in plate block form. The wide bottom plate number block in our Whitpain sale realized $12,000 hammer.
