VERY FINE COVER. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE NEW ORLEANS 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ON A CONFEDERATE 11-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER.
We are aware of eight patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flag and Cannon designs and the unique "Soldier" design in black. The 11-Star Flag on this cover is a modification of an earlier 10-star flag, with center star added. The predecessor 10-star design of this flag is also known used with a New Orleans 5c Provisional from the same writer (ex D.K. collection, Siegel Sale 1022, lot 1091).

EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THIS RARE NEW ORLEANS PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP.
The Crown survey records only six examples of the New Orleans 5c entire. While there exist more than six it remains an elusive Confederate Provisional (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL.
Richard Clauselle Puryear (1801-67) served as a Whig and then as a "Know Nothing" member of the United States House of Representatives in the 1850's, before serving in the Provisional Confederate Congress in 1861.
We sold an example of the Salem Provisional from the Peter Sharrer collection that we described as the finest example extant (Siegel Sale 1035, lot 85, realized $5,000 hammer). This example, on the same type of envelope, has equally clear strikes. (Image)
VERY FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE SALEM N.C. POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ENTIRE WITH "PAID" AND "5" HANDSTAMPS.
Fewer than ten examples of the "Paid" and "5" handstamped entire are known. This is the first we have offered since 2002.
