1530 c Image3c Green (158). Beautiful intense shade and choice centering, tied by perfectly clear strike of blue "GIN" Barrel fancy cancel with matching "Chicago Ill. Sep. 23 6PM" circular datestamp on buff cover to Hampton Ill., printed corner card

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE FINEST ON-COVER EXAMPLE OF THE FAMOUS "GIN" BARREL FANCY CANCELLATION OF CHICAGO.

The Chicago "Gin" Barrel is one of the best known and most distinctive of fancy cancellations used during the Bank Note era. While barrel designs are known from other post offices, including the Oil Barrel of Titusville Pa. and Barrel of Waterbury Conn., the Chicago design is the only known fancy cancel representing a distilled spirit. This cover has the clearest strike of any of the few recorded covers with the "Gin" Barrel.
