Mar. 6" integral-rate circular datestamp, expertly silked, small edge tear at top, Very Fine, scarce and unusual cover, three covers are known with similar markings, the oval handstamp and "Paid" are struck in the same ink, Sampson thought the envelopes might have been prepared with these markings in advance of use, the magazine started publication in 1850 (Image)

1256 c The Pitt Petri Collection of Western New York Town Markings. Purchased by a collector in our Sale 1051, a handful of covers removed and reconsigned, large collection mounted in 27 binders, probably over 1,000 covers, organized by county and town with lists of postmasters typed at top, covers range from stampless incl. some from early through late 1800's and a smattering later, wonderful range of markings incl. manuscript, some straightlines incl. "Bucktooth N.Y." (with 3c 1857, unlisted in ASCC), handstamped ovals and boxed, preponderance of circular datestamps of course, a few better markings incl. a scarce type Canadian cross-border scroll in red, many others, (early Niagara straightlines removed), also Mr. Petri's book on Western N.Y. postal markings, overall an interesting and worthwhile collection, this was assembled by Mr. Petri until the late 1960's, as such none of these covers have seen the light of day in more than 40 years

1263 c Philadelphia Postal History Collection 1790's-1900's. Huge collection with many hundreds of covers, core of the collection is a complete five-frame exhibit of Philadelphia stampless mail from 1792-1855 (missing only two Full-Rigged Ship covers offered as individual lots in this sale), exhibit traces the development of the city's postmarks and rates with large showing of Franklin marks, War of 1812 surcharge rates, handstamps and datestamps throughout the first half of the 19th Century, some better items incl. two examples of 4c private ship rate handstamp, some latest known uses of handstamps, "Phila" octagon handstamp struck in black, "R" (recorded) markings, outside the exhibit the collection contains albums and many manila envelopes stuffed with covers incl. adhesive uses and stampless, one very faintly struck Full-Rigged Ship, an interesting collection, the exhibit portion should be viewed to be appreciated
