1133 c Image(Wellington Square, Canada, to Catskill N.Y., 1830). "Money Letter". Endorsement at top, "Wellington Square 3rd January, 1830" double-circle datestamps with date in manuscript on folded cover to Catskill N.Y., postmaster free frank at top right, light strike of red Niagara Jan. 8 large double-circle exchange datestamp, rated "18-3/4" U.S. then crossed out and re-rated "37-1/2" as a double letter, opened roughly at top but all markings intact, Fine, the earliest recorded money letter from Canada to the U.S., ex Harrison and Sanderson (Image)

1134 c Image(Montreal, Canada, to New York, 1847) "MONEY LETTER". Straightline handstamp in red, matching "Montreal L.C. DE 5, 1847" circular datestamp and "Paid" straightline on folded letter to New York City, endorsed at top "Money", rated "1/6" Canadian as a quadruple letter, "Paid" crossed out and in same pen rated "30" (cents) as a triple over-400 miles rate letter to New York, Very Fine cross-border cover showing a combination of money letter use and the divergence of British and U.S. rate progressions, at this time there was a triple rate in the U.S. but British rates went from double to quadruple for 1 to 1-1/2 oz weight (Image)

1135 c ImageCanada to U.S., 1842-1850, Money Letters. Four covers, three Montreal to New York City and one Brantford to Detroit, three with "Money Letter" straightline handstamp in two different styles and one with manuscript "money", all show normal rates of Canadian and U.S. postage, one with tear on front, overall Very Fine group, the Canadian money letter system required a receipt but had no additional fees, there was no formal registration system in the U.S. at this time and no protection given to the money letters, the handstamps therefore served only to alert people to the possibility that the cover contained money (Image)
