Sep. 24" circular datestamp on multicolored "Columbia rules the Ocean" Patriotic cover depicting Columbia with Indian headress, scales, sword, American Flag and Eagle holding shield in its beak, to Poughkeepsie N.Y., Edward Cogan of Philadelphia imprint on back, minor edgewear

VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ELABORATE AND FASCINATING PATRIOTIC COVER DESIGNS WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.

This design combines several fascinating themes. Columbia was a popular nickname at the time for the United States, and was an Americanization of England's Britannia and the less well-known French Marianne. The song "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" was also popular during this period. The other themes depicted -- the flag, scales of justice, eagle and shield -- are all well-known patriotic themes. They combine to create one of the most beautiful and fascinating designs we have ever encountered. (Image)
