United States and Confederate States Postal History continued...

Union Patriotics
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2058 c Image3c Rose (65). Bright color, natural s.e. at right with part guideline, tied by grid cancel, red "New Bedford Mass. Paid Sep. 12" circular datestamp on bright buff cover to Boston with Crouching Naked Liberty with "Secession" Snake and "Dixie" caption, faint vertical fold/bend away from design and stamp

VERY FINE. A TRULY SHOCKING ANTI-SOUTHERN CARTOON DEPICTING THE "SECESSION" SNAKE SAVAGELY ATTACKING THE NUDE FIGURE OF LIBERTY.

Although a number of Civil War cartoons depict Lady Liberty fighting off secession snakes, this is the only one we have seen in which Liberty appears as a nude female figure, and the secession snake is wrapped around her body in a manner that has strong sexual overtones. Considering the social mores of the period, we would not be surprised if postal officials prohibited the use of this printed design in the mail, which could explain its great rarity. The Bischel collection (Nutmeg June 2000 sale) contained five examples with slight variations in the captions. This cover is in superior condition. (Image)

Aug. 5" circular datestamp on cover to Concord N.H. with remarkable pro-Union cartoon of seven dancing gents as "Secession States -- Present" and same seven in shackles as "Secession State -- Future", small gum toned spot on stamp, Extremely Fine, a very rare Civil War cartoon design and especially desirable with the beautiful bold orange-red markings (Image)
