The bottles are wanted today for dinner", Very Fine, the famous American general and presidential candidate Winfield Scott loved food and wine, this is an interesting reference to Spanish dessert wine (the correct spelling is Montilla) (Image)

2046   ImageWilliam Tecumseh Sherman. One-page autograph letter signed "W. T. Sherman, Maj. Genl.", datelined "Headquarters, Right Wing, 13 Army Corps., Memphis Dec. 20, 1862", addressed to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, contents recommends Capt. Henry Fitch who is stationed at Memphis for a transfer to take advantage of his experience as an attorney, fresh and Very Fine, on Dec. 29, 1862, nine days after writing this letter, Sherman commanded the Chickasaw Bluffs expedition which was one of the first steps of the Vicksburg Campaign (Image)

Short musical score in The March King's hand with "Imperial Edward" caption and signed "John Philip Sousa 1903", executed below a facsimile score and signature with his portrait on back of souvenir postal card to a T. Walker" and datelined "Sacramento Dec. 31st 1849", to his brother Charles in Boston, address panel with directive "By favor Mr. Fletcher" and "Sacramento City California Jan. 1st 1850" (not a post office marking), remarkable content from Walker soon after his arrival in California, describing in great detail the arduous journey on the Emigrant Trail, including the route, sights, other travelers and difficulties experienced, continues with description of gold mining, squatters who dispute Sutter's claim ("land holders say they [have no rights to squat] except in cases of diarrhea (which has been been very prevalent here the past season"), Chinese inhabitants of Sacramento "dressed 'a la Chinese'", and "shockingly bad" postal service to and from California, Very Fine, a significant letter from William Walker, whose later exploits and intrigues in Nicaragua eventually led to his arrest and execution in 1860 (Image)
