Sep. 6" (1861) double-circle datestamp on cover to Spencer Mass. with beardless Lincoln three-quarter portrait facing right and red and blue crossed waving flags surprint, Whittemore imprint, Milgram AL-17, with original enclosure including comments about the war -- "General Butler arrived here today to tell the great things he has just done at North Carolina...", mention of Edward Everett and hopes for a Union victory -- Extremely Fine, this 1860 campaign envelope, with an engraving based on a photograph by C. Tied by dotted circle cancel, "Lyons Iowa Dec. 13" circular datestamp on cover to Utica N.Y. with beardless Lincoln three-quarter portrait in dotted frame, "Abraham Lincoln. Pub. by J. C. Root Lyons Io." imprint, unlisted in Milgram, original enclosure on lettersheet with beardless Lincoln portrait, split rail fence and riverboat scene, Baker imprint, datelined Van Buren Ia. Dec. 9, 1860, and docketing confirms it is the original enclosure, cover has considerable edgewear, but the lettersheet is immaculate and the two make an attractive exhibit page -- according to The History of Clinton County, Iowa (Google Books), the publisher, J. C. Root, was born in 1844 and was only 16 years old when he produced this rare campaign envelope, he later became mayor of Lyons (Image)
