II Overprint (308 var/J39 var). 11 unused stamps, including Nos. 308, 333-337, 405, 416, 421, F1 and J39, three with original gum, rest either no gum or tropicalized part original gum, margins to mostly close or touching on one side, No. 336 slightly oxidized, a couple small flaws, overall Fine or appear so, a scarce and desirable group, two with P.F. certificates, according to philatelic lore, John Darrah, the U.S. postal agent in China in 1913, colluded with some stamp collectors and overprinted one sheet each of the stamps in stock at the agency (we doubt this applies to the printed varieties), as this was unauthorized he was ordered by Washington not to sell them, he complied with the order, but some had already reached collectors (Image)
