EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE $2.00 COLUMBIAN USED ON A MOURNING COVER TO GERMANY.

This cover comes from a set of mourning envelopes individually franked with Columbian Issue stamps from the 30c through the $5.00, all addressed to Major Muller in Neu-Ulm and postmarked in Chicago on July 17, 1893. The $5.00 from this correspondence realized $5,750 in our sale of the Laehder collection (Sale 1013, lot 316). Based on the 2013 Ludeman Columbian Dollar-Value Cover Census, these are the only mourning covers with dollar-value Columbian stamps. (Image)
