THE CELEBRATED "BURGER" SET OF TRUE FIRST DAY COVERS OF THE COLUMBIAN ISSUE, CANCELLED ON JANUARY 1, 1893, WHICH WAS A SUNDAY. ONE OF TWO KNOWN COMPLETE MATCHED SETS OF JANUARY 1, 1893, FIRST DAY COVERS.
The official first day of Issue for the Columbian stamps (excluding the 8c) was January 1, 1893, which was a Sunday, when most post offices were closed. Therefore, January 2 is accepted as the alternate First Day of Issue. However, a few covers are known that were stamped and mailed on Sunday, January 1st. The best known of this elusive group are the two sets of covers prepared by the Burger Brothers, two famous New York City stamp dealers.
The only recorded Sunday, January 1, 1893, Columbian covers are franked with the 1c (three); 2c (five) and two each of the 3c, 4c, 5c and 10c. Therefore, this remarkable group represents a complete set of January 1st First Day Covers. One other set is known, all cancelled by the duplex marking, offered in our auction of the Schwartz Collection (Siegel Sale 952, lot 290, realized $110,000 hammer). The 4c cover offered here has a notation indicating that only six values were prepared and postmarked on January 1.
The 1c, 2c and 10c with 1976 AFDCS certificates. Total Scott Retail $162,500.00 (Image)
