Nov. 25" circular datestamp and "Held for Postage" straightline handstamp on cover to French Consulate in Hong Kong, magenta "San Francisco Paid All Dec. 12" transit circular datestamp, opened to show back of cover which bears "Good Samaritan" Return Postage Label, from a third party who supplied 10c stamp and asks for reimbursement, two strikes "Hong-Kong C Ja 7 70" receiving backstamp -- once on cover and again on label -- along with writing in Chinese, couple minor edge flaws, still Very Fine, a striking exhibition item and fascinating postal history use -- although domestic postage was provided by kind-hearted individuals, and 3c covers are seen with labels such as this, we cannot recall seeing another example of an 1869 Pictorial foreign-mail usage prepaid in this manner (let alone a 10c cover to Hong Kong), ex Arch, with 1999 P.F. certificate (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE USED TO SINGAPORE. A GREAT RARITY.

The cover is addressed to James Cottle, captain of the bark Kathleen, in care of the U.S. Consul at Singapore. The Kathleen was built in 1844 and spent most of her time as a whaler, until she was sunk by a whale in 1902.

Illustrated in the PRA Census book on p. 185 prior to replacement of right 2c stamp. With 1988 P.F. certificate. (Image)
