VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE USE OF THE 12-CENT AND ONE-CENT 1869 ISSUE ON A 25-CENT AMERICAN PACKET RATE COVER TO ARGENTINA.
This combination paid the 25c rate for service via American packet to Rio de Janeiro, and from there by French packet to Buenos Aires. The 1869 PRA Census records only three 12c covers to Argentina.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE COMBINATION FRANKING OF 12-CENT AND 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A DAVIS CORRESPONDENCE COVER TO PERU.
The franking on this cover was sufficient to pay the 34c rate via American and then British packet. The transition to 22c occurred shortly before the cover was mailed and the 12c credit confirms that it was treated as a 22c cover. (Image)
VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL COVER WITH THE 10-CENT AND 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE USED TO LIMA, PERU, CORRECTLY PAYING THE 34-CENT RATE TO LIMA, PERU, BY AMERICAN AND BRITISH PACKET. ONE OF THE GEMS OF THE FAMOUS PORTCHESTER FIND.
The Davis correspondence, also known as the famous Portchester find (named for the New York town where many of the covers originated), provided a large number of high-value 1869 Pictorial Issue covers addressed to Lima, Peru. The rate was reduced to 22c after Feb. 16, 1870, so 24c stamps were no longer used except to pay the double rate (two are known).

VERY FINE AND FRESH. A COLORFUL MIXED-ISSUE 1869 FRANKING FOR THE 28-CENT RATE TO SPAIN -- ONE OF FOUR RECORDED WITH THIS FRANKING.
Ten 24c 1869 covers to Spain are recorded in the 1869 PRA census, but one of these (with 1c and 3c stamps, ex Ishikawa) has been declared a forgery, leaving nine genuine covers. Four covers are prepaid with a combination of the 24c and two 2c Bank Note stamps.
Ex Hart and Lafayette. With 1968 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE AND SPECTACULAR. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1869 ISSUE ON COVER TO PORTUGAL AND THE ONLY AVAILABLE 10-CENT 1869 COVER TO PORTUGAL. A MAGNIFICENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVER AND ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DR. HEIMBURGER COLLECTION.
The Convention rates effective from Jan. 1, 1868, to Dec. 31, 1870, followed a progression of 10c U.S. per -1/2 oz. and 12c credit to G.B. per 7.5 grams (-1/4 oz.). Therefore, this letter must have weighed no more than a quarter-ounce and was prepaid with 22c postage (12c U.S. credit to G.B.). Unlike mail to Spain with identical rates, mail to Portugal was prepaid only to the Portugese border. Therefore, there are no British credit markings on covers to Portugal, and the recipients had to pay internal Portugese postage (in this case, 40 reis).
This letter was carried on the Cunarder Russia, which departed New York on December 29, 1869, and arrived at Queenstown on Jan. 6, 1870. This was the last Cunard sailing before service was suspended for five months due to Cunard's refusal to carry mail at the reduced sea postage rate effective January 1, 1870.
Illustrated and described in Laurence 10c 1869 book (p. 130), where the other 10c 1869 cover to Portugal is shown (16c rate with a 6c 1869; located in the Hirzel collection at the Swiss PTT Museum) (Image)
