A SPECTACULAR COVER AND EXTREMELY RARE MIXED FRANKING PAYING THE 6-CENT U.S.-HAWAII CONVENTION RATE AND 6-CENT U.S.-GREAT BRITAIN TREATY RATE.

During the period from July 1, 1870, to December 31, 1881, a new treaty established a rate of 6c for any letter (-1/2 oz) between the United States and Hawaii. This could be paid by either U.S. or Hawaiian postage. However, for a letter destined beyond U.S. borders, it was still necessary to add U.S. postage. Three such post-treaty rate combination covers are recorded. Two are to Nova Scotia (one is seriously defective, the other was sold in our 2002 Rarities sale). The third is the cover offered here.
