VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN INCALCULABLY RARE COMPLETE SHEET OF 100 OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PLATE PROOF ON INDIA.
The lower denominations of the 1869 Pictorial Issue were printed in sheets of 300 (two panes of 150). The four bicolor denominations were printed in sheets of 100, due to size and possibly to facilitate the pressman's job of aligning the paper for the second pass through the press. The largest recorded multiple of the issued stamp is a block of six. This proof sheet clearly shows the positions of the varieties, as well as the faint layout lines on the plate.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED SETS OF BLOCKS OF FOUR OF THE 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT PLATE PROOFS. A PHENOMENAL RARITY -- ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE OF ALL 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE PROOFS.
All examples of the 1869 Pictorial Invert proofs come from the sheets in the Earl of Crawford collection. Two sets of blocks of four are known to still survive intact, in addition to the unique imprint and plate number blocks of eight (which sold for $230,000 hammer in the 2009 Cunliffe sale). (Image)
VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE COMPLETE SET OF 1869 PICTORIAL ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PLATE PROOFS.
The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 100 of each value/color was printed. Very few have been kept together as intact sets. (Image)
