Washington May 15, 1918, First Trip" duplex datestamp on cover from Albert Gorham to Charles Severn in Chicago, signed by Capt. B. B. Lipsner, the organizer of the first U.S. airmail service, Philadelphia May 16 transit backstamp -- this is the correct date for the northbound May 15 inaugural flight from Washington D.C., which crashed on a farm near Waldorf Md., causing the May 15 mail to be delayed until the following day -- Very Fine and scarce signed cover, the additional 1c stamp was not necessary, as the 24c First Air Post Issue included all postage and the special delivery fee (Image)

Washington May 15, 1918, First Trip" duplex datestamp on cover to Philadelphia, two Philadelphia backstamps dated May 16 (3 PM and 5:30 PM), carried on Lieutenant George L. Boyle's first attempt to fly the mails, which (like his second attempt) resulted in a crash landing and delayed mail, this was carried on the following day, C3 with pre-printing paper fold, some mounting adhesive on backflap which just extends to top edge on front, Very Fine appearance, the additional 3c stamp was not necessary, as the 24c First Air Post Issue included all postage and the special delivery fee (Image)
