1210 c Image"Lahaina S.I. April 19th 1851." Folded letter from William Dawson to John W. Stout in New York, describing his trip from San Francisco on the schooner Samuel Roberts, an 18 day near-disaster: "there being 10 men and about 2,000,000 fleas and about 200,000 Bed bugs aboard and the men living off of salt pork, salt beef and potatoes...I will leave it for yourself to judge what the fleas and bed bugs lived on."; address leaf with "San Francisco Cal. 1 Jun." circular datestamp pencil "40" and red pencil "42", small portion of contents clipped out -- possibly a form of censorship by the Stouts as the line preceding it begins, "They are the most amorist set of people," and one following it reads, "in a Sling wanting Clapp or Pox Medicine," etc., otherwise Very Fine, eighteen months later William C. Dawson would help create the greatest of all Hawaiian covers when he mailed a letter to his sister Eliza with the 2c and 5c Missionaries; here he begins his first letter from the Islands with just the right amount of drama: "I have cast my anchor on this Island & settled down in peace after having been tossed on the tumultuous Waves of Life for Thousands of Miles & have come to the end of my journey.", ex Honolulu Advertiser (Image)
