VERY FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST HANDSTAMPED POSTMARK USED AT SAN FRANCISCO.

This San Francisco marking is recorded on covers dated from June 20 to August 1, 1849. Although written from California, the sender addressed the letter to the "United States" (Image)

1184 c Image"San Francisco June 20" Manuscript Postmark. Neat red manuscript postmark with matching "40" rate on blue 1849 folded letter to Little Britain N.Y., yeardate of letter is missing but some fascinating contents discussing passage thru Mexico to San Francisco incl. "we are here before the flood of emigration, only three vessels have got here around Cape Horn.... The South Americans are pouring in daily, there are 100 ships laying at anchor in the bay nearly deserted by their crews...the people as they arrive stop in tents until they are ready to go up the rivers to the mines as there is not houses to accommodate all.", some waterstaining and edgewear

VERY FINE. A RARE SAN FRANCISCO MANUSCRIPT POSTMARK ON A FOLDED LETTER WITH FASCINATING CONTENTS DISCUSSING THE EARLY DAYS OF THE GOLD RUSH.

The Williams book notes that the San Francisco manuscript postmark was used between March 15 and June 20 of 1849. That would make this the last day of use.
